Bruno Cheyrou came with good credentials, but he struggled to make an impression at Liverpool.
Cheyrou was loaned out to Marseille by Rafa Benitez and then Bordeaux with the prospect of making it a permanent transfer but it was Rennes who eventually took the plunge and signed him.
Cheyrou was hailed as "the new Zidane" by Gerard Houllier when he announced his capture and he made a superb debut in a pre-season friendly against Lazio at Anfield.
He won his first senior cap for France shortly after arriving on Merseyside and has been 'capped' twice more since then. He was played on the left side of midfield by Houllier and found it tough to cement a regular place in the team.
He will best be remembered for the goal that brought a rare League victory against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and his two goals against Newcastle in the FA Cup later that same month that got him voted the best player of the 4th round.
