Liverpool's hopes of signing Mark van Bommel are over after the midfielder sealed a move to AC Milan.
The Netherlands international had been linked with a move to Anfield during the January transfer window, with the 33-year-old viewed as the ideal holding midfielder to complement the game of Steven Gerrard.
There was never any word from Liverpool on the matter, although the player's agent confirmed the interest, but any hopes have been dashed after Bayern Munich terminated Van Bommel's contract - freeing him up to sign a deal with the Rossoneri.
"I am leaving FC Bayern with a heavy heart, but with my head held high," said the Dutch midfielder in a statement. "I had four-and-a-half wonderful and successful years here and would like to express my gratitude to the club and the fans. FC Bayern will always have a place in my heart."
Van Bommel joined Bayern from Barcelona in 2006 and made a total of 122 appearances for the Bundesliga giants.
