Liverpool will try to solve their problem at left-back with the signing of Everton's Leighton Baines.
The Reds have been unable to find anyone to lay a permanent claim to the role in recent years which appears to have been cursed.
Emiliano Insua seemed to have made the position is own but a loss of form saw him farmed out on loan to Galatasaray. Paul Kionchesky spent an ill-fated few months there in the first half of this season but was clearly out of his depth, forcing Glen Johnson to fill in, out of position. Fabio Aurelio - unarguably the natural option - has been unable to string a run of games together due to a raft of injuries.
This pantomime has led Liverpool to look across town enviously to the closest rivals. Baines has enjoyed his best season in an Everton shirt, winning rave reviews from all sections of the football world. So impressive have his displays been that he has been considered very unfortunate to have not been named in the PFA Team of the Year with Ashley Cole earning the nomination instead.
Indeed were it not for the excellence of the Chelsea man, Baines would almost certainly be England's first choice left-back.
Now Liverpool want to see him play that role in a red shirt and hope that the Toffees' financial concerns could see them reluctantly sell despite the rivalry that exists across Stamley Park. Baines could make the switch for £13m.
