Liverpool are considering a move for former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes in order to provide extra competition for Simon Mignolet.
Valdes is currently recovering from a torn cruciate knee ligament and is not expected to be fit before November.
But the 32-year-old can be signed outside the transfer window because he is a free agent, having left the Nou Camp when his contract expired in June.
Liverpool are prepared to give him time to prove his fitness before going through with a deal, sources have told ESPN.
Mignolet has been the undisputed first-choice at Anfield since arriving from Sunderland for £9 million in June 2013.
The Belgium international played in all 38 of Liverpool's Premier League games last season, with back-up Brad Jones appearing only in FA Cup ties.
Valdes, a graduate of Barcelona's youth set-up, first indicated in May 2013 that he was planning to leave the Nou Camp.
But he has been out of action since suffering serious knee damage during a league match against Celta Vigo in March, an injury which kept him out of contention for a place in Spain's World Cup squad.
