Arsene Wenger is hoping to finally bring a new centre-back to the club after entering into negotiations with Birmingham City over the potential transfer of Scott Dann.
The former Coventry captain has been linked with a move away from the midlands club for most of the summer after suffering relegation to the Championship.
The 24-year-old earned rave reviews for his impressive partnership with Roger Johnson, who has joined Premier League side Wolves, and has been strongly linked with both Arsenal and Liverpool.
The Reds had hoped to convince Dann to choose a move to Anfield and many had believed this could have been a possibility with the centre-back admitting he had been a season ticket holder in his teens.
However, according to reports on Sky Sports, Wenger has now opened talks with the defender after admitting defeat in his pursuit of Bolton's Gary Cahill and Blackburn's giant centre-back Christopher Samba.
Dann first moved to Birmingham for £3.5million and soon established himself as one of the most consistent performers in the Premiership and is keen to secure an instant return.
"I am still a Birmingham City player until I get told otherwise. I am an ambitious person and I want to play at the top level. Everyone who knows me knows that, and I am no different to any player," revealed Dann last month.
Arsenal are keen to secure a deal for the £10m-rated defender before the start of the Premier League season when they take on Newcastle United.
