After last night's game many commentators remarked on the gulf in class between Liverpool and Arsenal and how Liverpool are still not ready to challenge for the title.
While our position in the table might suggest we still have a long way to go, on the basis of last night's performance and this season?s as a whole, I believe Liverpool are just one player away from greatness.
If you look at the Liverpool team from defence to attack compared to Arsenal's we match them in almost every department. They have Campbell we have Hyppia, they have Vieira we have Gerrard or Hamman for that matter. And of course while they have the irrepressible Henry we've still got Owen, who on his day is more than a match for Henry. Take the 2001 FA Cup Final for a start!
The difference, which was evident last night, is Arsenal have in Pires and Bergkamp two outstanding players, who can turn a game in an instance. Although in recent games since Diouf and Risse have been making regular starts we have looked a great deal more creative, we still lack a player of Bergkamp's statue. It's becoming boring saying this but I can't understand while Houllier hasn't looked to bring in someone new in the transfer market.
He has plenty of options, take Kewell for example a Liverpool supporter as a boy at cash strapped Leeds available for the right price. Despite this if one thing Liverpool have shown in the last few games is a real determination to turn things around, with all the players wearing their heart on their sleeve. Even Heskey. I've never been his biggest fan, but he seems to be a different more focused player.
I'm sick of people being so quick to dismiss Liverpool and talk about the gap between us, Man United and Arsenal. These people seem to forget our position last year very quickly and how at the start of the year many journalists were saying we could have the league wrapped up by Easter. It hasn't happened like that, however, the signs are still there.
A Daily Express reporter Joyce said this morning 'The gulf between the teams remains,' well it's a very small gulf and its about time we got our cheque book out and did something about it.
