Joe Maloney was born in Liverpool and came through the junior ranks at Anfield before signing professional forms in January 1951.
He was a central defender or centre-half as they were called in those days but his opportunities for first-team football were limited because there were a number of other players at the club who could also play in that role. He made six First Division appearances in 1952-53 and another half-dozen a year later during the first half of what turned out to be Liverpool's last season in the top division for eight years.
Joe joined Shrewsbury Town in July 1954 and made nearly 250 Football League appearances for the Shropshire club before closing his playing career with brief spells at Port Vale and Crewe. He actually was sold two days after he made his debut for Port Vale!

Shrewsbury, Port Vale, Crewe, Winsford United (amateur)
