Right winger Jimmy Carter was signed by Kenny Dalglish from Millwall in January 1991.
Carter had earned himself a good reputation with the Lions after earlier spells with Crystal Palace and Queens Park Rangers. He was part of the squad that gained promnotion into the top division for the first time in the south-east London club's history in 1988.
Two days after arriving at Anfield he went straight into the first team for a league match at Aston Villa two days later when he was given Dalglish's famous number seven jersey.
It was the first of just eight appearances Carter would make for Liverpool's first team - five under Dalglish and three under Kenny's successor, Graeme Souness.
It was clear that Carter was not going to be part of Souness' plans and he returned to the capital to join Arsenal in October 1991.
Jimmy spent over three years at Highbury but only played in 25 league matches for the Gunners and was twice loaned out to Oxford United before making a permanent move to Portsmouth in 1995. Three years later he was back at Millwall for a second spell, then at the end of the 1998-99 season he had to retire as a player at the age of 33 because of a serious back injury.
