Jason McAteer is a bona-fide boyhood Red who saw his dream come true when he signed for the Reds.
He had created his reputation at Bolton as a central midfielder, also starring for Republic of Ireland in the 1994 World cup. McAteer came as a breath of fresh air, his energetic runs down the right flank stirring all kinds of trouble. He was tireless in his efforts and sacrificed himself for the team.
He was a regular from 1995-1997 but in his last two years he spent more time on the bench.
Jason's post-Liverpool career saw him move to Blackburn Rovers when he was sold by Gerard Houllier for £4 million pounds and he helped Rovers into the Premier League at the end of the 2000-2001 season. He then moved to Sunderland but was part of the squad relegated from the Premier League in 2003. Sunderland released him a year later and he moved to his fifth and final English club, Tranmere Rovers.
Manager Brian Little made Jason his club captain and the new skipper also begin to look seriously at coaching to follow his retirement as a player, something that happened at the end of the 2006-07 season when he was a few days short of his 36th birthday.
In the middle of June 2009 and on the same day that his former Liverpool team-mate and friend John Barnes was unveiled as the new Tranmere manager, McAteer was also added to the Birkenhead club's payroll as Assistant Manager.
