Former England captain Ernie Blenkinsop was almost 32 years of age when he joined Liverpool from Sheffield Wednesday, where he had played 424 games from 1923-1934. He'd also won the League Championship two years in succession in 1929 and 1930.
Blenkinsop started out as an inside left, but was early on converted to left-back. His positional play was said to have been impeccable and his delivery accurate.
Blenkinsop was at Anfield for five seasons, but in only one of those, 1935-36, could he be considered a regular in the side, a season in which he missed only five league matches.
He played in the first seven matches of the 1936-37 season, before losing his place to Benjamin Dabbs.
Ernie's 71st and final league appearance for the Reds came in a home match against Charlton Athletic on 4th of September 1937.
