Rennes midfielder Sylvain Marveaux has claimed he is 'very close' to agreeing a move to Liverpool this summer.
Marveaux is out of contract at the end of the season and would be available to leave the Ligue 1 side on a free transfer.
The 24-year-old is one of several players being monitored by Liverpool under the supervision of the club's director of football strategy, Damien Comolli.
Speculation was fuelled over a possible move for Marveaux when the player was spotted in the Anfield directors' box during the home defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers in December.
UEFA rules permit a foreign club to open talks with a player during the final six months of his contract.
And Marveaux has suggested he is on the brink of negotiating a deal that would see him become Liverpool's first major signing of the summer.
"I am very close to reaching agreement with Liverpool about joining them next season," he said.
Marveaux has spent his entire career playing for Rennes and has previously featured for France under-21s.
But the Frenchman will not play again this season due to a groin operation last month, after which Rennes general manager Pierre Dreossi admitted it was unlikely Marveaux would play for the club again.
