Liverpool are on alert to join the bidding if Javi Martinez leaves Bayern Munich this summer, writes Steve Bates in the Sunday People.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has made no secret of his admiration for the 25-year-old Spanish international, who joined the German giants in a £36million move from Athletic Bilbao in 2012.
But Kop boss Brendan Rodgers wants to boost his back-line by signing a top- class central defender, and he will urge the club to spend big to attract the right player to help Liverpool's Premier League title bid and Champions League campaign next season.
Martinez wasn't on Rodgers' original list of targets, but he will join the race for the Spanish star if he becomes available.
Liverpool are also battling to land another Spaniard, with Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno a viable target.
The exciting 21-year-old - valued at around £18m - is also being chased by Chelsea, Manchester United and Real Madrid.
