Brendan Rodgers wants to sign Chelsea's out-of-favour left-back Ryan Bertrand.
Rodgers is keen but could face competition from Merseyside rivals Everton who are likely to move in if they sell Leighton Baines.
Liverpool boss Rodgers is keen to make a couple of signings in January to strengthen his squad and the left back slot is one area he wants to address.
Bertrand, 24, has fallen down the pecking order at Chelsea since Jose Mourinho's return and right back Cesar Azpilicueta has recently been playing as a makeshift left back.
Mourinho is ready to let Bertrand go but Chelsea's dilemma is whether to sell to a direct rival and Liverpool could face a battle to get him.
The Reds may be expected to pay a higher price for Bertrand as they are competing with Chelsea for the title and a top four place.
Mirror Sport yesterday revealed Liverpool's deal for Basel winger Mohamed Salah is progressing well and Rodgers has cash to spend.
With the right couple of additions, Liverpool believe they can challenge for the title.
Everton also face a dilemma as Manchester United are back in for England left back Baines but manager Roberto Martinez does not want to sell.
If Everton do need a left back in January then they will look to Bertrand who is young, English and started the Champions League final for Chelsea so is a European champion.
