Juan Manuel Vargas has emerged as a Liverpool transfer target, but they will face competition from Zenit St Petersburg for the Fiorentina midfielder's signature.
The Peru international was linked with both Manchester United and Arsenal in January, but no deal was completed.
He now looks certain to leave the Florence-based club at the end of the season and interest in him is already growing.
According to reports in Italy, Liverpool are among the teams keen on the versatile 28-year-old, who can play anywhere on the left flank.
However, Zenit are leading the race for his signature and it is believed his representatives have already held talks with the Russian club.
Zenit asked about Vargas's availability in the winter transfer window, as they looked to add some attacking flair to their midfield.
In the end they were unable to agree a deal for the former Catania man and instead opted to sign Andrey Arshavin on loan from Arsenal until July.
