Liverpool have agreed in principle a season-long loan deal for Valencia left-back Aly Cissokho.
The Anfield club were hoping to sign Guilherme Siqueira from Granada but were unable to agree a deal for the Brazilian, who is a target for Real Madrid.
The French left back, who also had spells with Lyon and Porto, has been drafted in to give the Liverpool manager more options in defence.
Jose Enrique currently holds down the left-back position, but Liverpool have scant choice in terms of cover if the Spaniard picks up an injury. Liverpool have also signed Kolo Toure and Luis Alberto to bolster their defence, with goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and forward Iago Aspas signing too.
Liverpool are also in negotiations with Anzhi Machachkala to sign the Brazil international Willian.
If those talks are successful, Willian would become the marquee signing Brendan Rodgers has been anxious to add to his squad all summer.
