Liverpool's owners face a test of ambition after being told they must raise the stakes to sign Luis Suarez and Charlie Adam.
Director of football strategy Damien Comolli returned from talks over Uruguay striker Suarez yesterday with Ajax refusing to budge from a £25 million valuation.
"We'll wait for them to come back with something more respectful," said an Ajax spokesman. "If you compare the £12.7m Liverpool want to pay for Suarez with other transfers, you can imagine that it's far too low."
Ryan Babel will not be included as a makeweight in a deal with his former club after he performed a U-turn last night and agreed to join Hoffenheim for £6m.
Liverpool will also have to increase a £4.5m offer for Blackpool midfielder Adam, who yesterday had a transfer request rejected.
