Liverpool are in talks with Hull City over a permanent move for defender Daniel Ayala.
Tigers boss Nigel Pearson is keen to sign the Spaniard who made 12 appearances for Hull during a loan spell last season.
However, the clubs have so far been unable to agree on a valuation.
"I never rule anything in or out but I would say it's unlikely," Pearson said.
"Ayala is a target and we've put a bid in. The clubs are in discussion and we'll see where it takes us.
"As always the criteria of how you add to your squad is governed by finances."
Meanwhile, Bolton boss Owen Coyle has slammed reports that defender Gary Cahill is set to join Liverpool.
The England centre-back remains at the Reebok despite a summer of speculation which has seen him also linked with Arsenal and Manchester City.
"It is irresponsible," Coyle said. "Nothing has happened, there is nothing to report.
"This story is without a shred of foundation. To just reel words off is in poor taste.
"Nothing surprises you in football but people should have more knowledge of the background for anything before they write it."
Meanwhile, Newcastle boss Alan Pardew expects full-back Jose Enrique to play in their friendly against Fiorentina tomorrow - despite Liverpool's interest in the Spaniard.
"Enrique is still here and will play on Saturday," he said.
"I know there's interest in Jose, but no concrete interest."
