Rennes hope to push France right back Rod Fanni into a move to Liverpool and say a deal could be done in the next two days.
Marseille want the 29-year-old after losing Spain Under 21 international Cesar Azpilicueta for the rest of the season, but Rennes - third in the French league - would rather sell Fanni abroad than strengthen a team who are one place and one point behind them.
Fanni - who has also been tracked by Everton, West Ham and Sunderland - is priced at about £3million, but Marseille are reluctant to pay more than £2.5m.
The Ligue 1 champions are considering a loan move for Sunderland's Marcos Angeleri as an alternative.
Reliable French newspaper L'Equipe reports that Liverpool are very keen on Fanni and Rennes general manager Pierre Dreossi said: 'A decision will be made within 48 hours.'
Anfield boss Roy Hodgson is also keen on Rennes midfielder Yann M'Vila but faces competition from Real Madrid for the 20-year-old.
