Ladies must avoid cup upset

Liverpool Ladies manager Robbie Johnson has urged his players to avoid an FA Women's Cup upset on Sunday when they entertain Charlton in the fifth round.

The Reds will play in the new FA Women's Super League this summer while the Addicks are two divisions below.

"What would be a greater scalp for them than a WSL team in Liverpool Ladies," Johnson told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"That would be ideal for Charlton, so hopefully we're not going to slip on any banana skins in the cup."

Liverpool are one of eight teams to play in the new summer league, which starts in April, along with local rivals Everton.

Both the Blues and Arsenal have been the major trophy winners over the past few seasons and are expected to be the main contenders again this campaign.

Robbie Johnson's squad is relatively unknown by comparison, but he is hoping his players will raise one or two eyebrows.

"I would hope we'd want to compete for the league," said Johnson. "That has got to be the idea for every player that we've got.

"To be fair, that's the aim of every player in any of the eight teams. Everybody will look at Arsenal and Everton as two of the trophy winning sides.

"But we should all be wanting to win it and certainly we are. How high up the league we are will be dependant on whether we apply ourselves from game to game."
