Liverpool will dispatch Damien Comolli to Amsterdam today for make-or-break talks with Ajax as they seek to land Uruguay striker Luis Suarez.
The move underlines Liverpool's determination to capture Suarez for what could be a fee in excess of £20million.
They are also facing a major battle to land midfielder Charlie Adam from Blackpool.
Comolli, director of football strategy, will be looking to bring down the asking price of £25m for Suarez - who is 24 today - when he meets with Ajax general director Rick van den Boog.
Liverpool will try to use Ryan Babel as a makeweight in the deal and Comolli knows he will have to make significant progress today during the talks or risk the interest falling apart.Ajax coach Frank de Boer wants it resolved sooner rather than later and said: "We won't let Luis go on January 31 at 23.55. It is logical and a deal that I have made with Rick van den Boog.
"To replace Suarez will be difficult, but we are ready to have a Plan B. We know what we want if he leaves."
Heerenveen forward Bas Dost is on Ajax's wanted list, with Stoke's Eidur Gudjohnsen also a target to replace Suarez, who is keen to move to the Premier League and emulate Carlos Tevez.
"I used to think English football was not my style, but now I think it's a kind of football that suits me," he said.
