Schalke are set to offer star striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar a new contract in a bid to ward off interest from Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham.
The predatory hitman had been tipped to join the Gunners on transfer deadline day before Arsene Wenger was alerted to the availability of Manchester United's Danny Welbeck.
Huntelaar has less than a year remaining on his current deal, and the Schalke hierarchy are determined not to lose him on a free transfer.
The 31-year-old, who has plied his trade for a number of top European teams including Ajax, Real Madrid and AC Milan, is yet to decide if his future remains in the Bundesliga, and could yet make the switch to the Premier League as he enters the latter stages of his career.
Huntelaar has been a great hit since joining Schalke in 2010, finding the back of the net 92 times in 140 appearances. With 65 international caps to his name, the Dutchman would prove to be a savvy purchase for either Arsene Wenger, Brendan Rogers or Mauricio Pochettino, but Schalke are desperate to keep hold of him.
Club director Horst Heldt earlier revealed: "There was no summer approach from Arsenal or from any other club.
"Klaas-Jan is part of Schalke's core. We can definitely see him signing a contract renewal here.
"He is a great player, an absolute modern professional. He's always hungry for success and wants to achieve his goals."
