Skysports.com understands Liverpool could train their sights on Scott Dann having seemingly lost out in their attempts to land Phil Jones.
Liverpool had been favourites to land Blackburn centre-half Jones but it would appear the England Under 21 international has plumped for Manchester United, a story revealed by skysports.com earlier on Wednesday.
Arsenal and Tottenham were also interested in the 19-year-old but with a move to Old Trafford pending, Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish is ready to shift his focus to Dann.
The Birmingham stopper enjoyed a fine campaign despite the club's relegation, with Dann's injury coinciding with a miserable close to the campaign for the Midlands outfit.
Dann has established himself as one of the best young defenders in the country during the last two seasons and his progress has not gone unnoticed elsewhere.
It is believed Dann, 24, is desperate to stay in the Premier League and could represent value for money at around the £10million mark in light of the recent fees agreed for Jones and Jordan Henderson.
Arsenal are also thought to be in the running but as a lifelong Liverpool fan the sway of Anfield could work in Dalglish's favour.
