Charlie Adam wants to join Liverpool by the end of the week - but faces a bitter fight with Blackpool over his exit.
Skipper Adam had talks with boss Ian Holloway before the Sunderland game on Saturday and left him in no doubt that he is desperate to go to the Kop.
The Scottish midfielder was ready to demand a move BEFORE the match but was talked out of his stance after Holloway pleaded with him to give his best - and then be sold.
Adam turned in another outstanding display, scoring a consolation penalty and receiving rave reviews despite the behind-the-scenes drama.
However Holloway's claim that Kop boss Kenny Dalglish will have to vastly increase his offer for Adam has put the player and his club on a war footing again.
The deal is now down to money and Adam is now poised to tell the Seasiders again that he wants out, worried that the Anfield move may pass him by if he does not go in this window.
Tomorrow's home match with Manchester United could be his final game for the Tangerines - if he plays.
Liverpool are prepared to go to £5 million for Adam, but could switch their sights to another target. The former Rangers prospect is keen to avoid that nightmare outcome.
Liverpool's director of football Damien Commolli last night vowed to step up the club's bid to land Luis Suarez.
The Reds are closing in on a £19million deal to land the 23-year-old striker who has scored 81 goals in 108 league appearances for Ajax, including 35 in 33 last season.
Commolli has revealed that the versatile frontman is a big priority because the club are desperate to land a support striker for Fernando Torres before the window closes.
Speaking on French TV show Les Specialistes, Commolli said: "We want a forward because we lack pace and penetration on the flanks'.
Asked about highly-rated alternatives Gervinho and Eden Hazard at Lille, Commolli added: "Gervinho and Hazard are super players but I know the Lille board well and they won't sell in January."
Commolli's comments on Suarez came as Ajax last night warned they will keep Suarez until the summer unless Liverpool tie up the deal within days.
Ajax coach Frank de Boer said: "We won't let Luis go on January 31 at 23.55. It is logical and a deal which I made with [general director of Ajax] Rik van den Boog.
"To replace Suarez will be difficult, but we are ready. We have a Plan B, we know what we want if he leaves."
The Dutch club are rivalling PSV for unhappy Stoke striker Eidur Gudjohnsen to replace Suarez.
