Belgium set up a showdown with Brazil next week after surviving a late scare against Russia to qualify from Group H.
The Belgians knew a win would guarantee them a place in the last 16 and they seemed well on course when Wilmots gave them a 3-1 lead with just eight minutes left to play.
But Russia gave themselves a lifeline two minutes from time with a goal from Sytchev and then piled forward in search of the equalising goal which would have taken them through at the expense of their opponents.
Johan Walem gave Belgium an early lead before Vladimir Beschastnykh equalised for the Russians. For 25 minutes it was Russia who had a place in the second round of the competition before goals from Wesley Sonck and Mark Wilmots swung the game back Belgium's way.
Belgium go through as group runners-up and will take on Brazil in Kobe next week.
Final score: Belgium 3-2 Russia
