With the clock ticking towards full-time on the opening day of the 2007-08 season, Liverpool turned to Gerrard for inspiration and he delivered a sumptuous free-kick to get them off to a winning start. He won the set-piece by drawing a foul on the edge of the Villa box, and stepped up to curl home the winner into the top corner for 2-1.
