Hughes was captain of Bootle FC. He made just a single appearance for Liverpool's first-team, which came in their debut season in the Football League, 1893-94.

He played as left half in a 4-0 win against Northwich Victoria on February 3, 1894. This victory was one of 22 during the league season. The other six matches were drawn as the club won the Second Division championship with ease at the first time of asking.
