Torben Piechnik blossomed in Denmark's victorious Euro 92' squad and that promoted Graeme Souness to bring him to Anfield.
The manager felt the Dane would be a perfect partner at the back for Mark Wright after he showed considerable man-marking skills against some of the best forwards in the world during the tournament.
He made his debut at Villa Park and came up against a striker in Dean Saunders with something to prove. 'Deano' was sold by Souness and the new Villa man made himself an instant hero when he scored twice. Piechnik couldn't have faced a more difficult start to English football.
He found the pace and physical demands of the English league tough to handle and found himself in and out of the team. His final appearance for the club came in a 3-0 defeat at Newcastle United when he was replaced at half-time. He was released by Roy Evans.
