Fair-haired Tom Gardner, nicknamed "Gandhi", joined Liverpool as an amateur from Orrell FC in July 1928, signing professional forms a year later.
He was a half-back who played in five consecutive First Division fixtures in the second half of the 1929-30 season when the regular No.4 Tom Morrison was unavailable.
Morrison had been an ever-present the season before and would only miss three league matches the season after so Gardner's opportunities were limited as a result. There was only one victory for the club in the five games Gardner figured in and Liverpool finished the season in mid-table.
The highlight from his post Liverpool career were four years with Aston Villa, where he gained international honours featuring twice for England.
Gardner was a long-throw expert and once won a Daily Mail competition by throwing 32 yards, 2 inches.
Other clubs:
Orrell FC (amateur), Grimsby, Hull, Aston Villa, Burnley; Blackburn, Preston, Blackpool, Man Utd & Southport (wartime guest); Wrexham; Wellington Town, Oswestry Town, Saltney (all amateur)
