Harston was a late bloomer who joined Liverpool for a British transfer record at the time, after scoring no less than 85 goals in 75 games for Mansfield in the Division Three North.
Amazingly he scored 55 out of Mansfield's total of 91 in the 1936-37 season. He only played for Liverpool on five occasions during the first-half of the 1937-38 season. He scored after only 13 minutes of his debut at Chelsea on the opening day of the season but Liverpool were thrashed 6-1! He then scored twice in the next game when Portsmouth visited Anfield but lost his place in the side to Fred Howe after four matches had been played. His only other appearance for the first eleven came when he replaced Howe at Blackpool towards the end of November 1937, a fixture the visitors won 1-0.
Harston then unfortunately broke his leg which effectively finished his professional career.
