Syd Roberts joined Liverpool after growing up at Bootle Junior Oordnance Corps.
Although he was part of the Reds' squad for six different seasons, he only played in 58 league matches for the club and a large number of those (25) came in 1932-33, the only season in which he could really be considered a first-team regular.
Roberts made his debut against Portsmouth at Anfield towards the end of the 1931-32 season and then scored six times from those 25 First Division fixtures he was selected for a year later.
Mostly used as an inside-forward, although he did switch to other positions occasionally, Roberts was possibly unfortunate to play for Liverpool at a time when they had a far more settled team.
In three consecutive seasons when he was involved at Anfield, the Reds called on 26, 28 and 26 different men for First Division matches, and changes to the side were extremely frequent during that time - Syd being just one of several players affected by that.
The last of his 62 League and cup appearances for Liverpool came in the second game of the 1936-37 campaign and it was not a happy note for him to bow out on as the Reds were thumped 6-2 at Portsmouth!
