A former captain of the England u-18 team, Steve Harkness was a left sided defender who was signed by Kenny Dalglish from Carlisle United.
He made his first team breakthrough under Graeme Souness who once labelled him as "a man you would like in the trenches with."
He asked to be transferred in the 1994-95 season but an injury crisis meant Harkness got his chance at LFC and he was first-choice for the first half of the 1995-96 season playing as a left wing-back in Evans' 3-5-2 formation.
Harkness got suspended for receiving too many bookings and that cost him his place. He made a return to the starting line-up but broke his leg after an hour's play against Coventry on April 6, 1996. He played his next game 11 months later. He featured regularily again in 1997-98, but became one of the first players Houllier sold in his first season. Souness was manager at Benfica and wanted his man back. He later followed Souness to Blackburn.
