Gerard Houllier swooped for the Swiss international after utilising a relegation clause in Henchoz's contract guaranteeing him an immediate release if Blackburn received a fixed offer.
Nicknamed 'Hench', he was an extremely good man marker, brilliant tackler and had a never-say-die attitude that inspired others around him.
However, the arrival of Rafael Benitez saw Jamie Carragher moved to centre back, leaving Henchoz wondering about his first-team future.
With the writing on the wall, he joined Celtic where he struggled to play games, but former Liverpool reserve striker, Paul Jewell, came to his rescue and he joined newly-promoted Wigan in the Premiership where he went straight into the starting XI.
He rejoined Blackburn in the 2006-2007 season, but only featured in 16 games before being released in the summer of 2008.
In the middle of October, 2008, 34-year old Stephane Henchoz announced that he had retired as a player but that he intended to stay in the game as a coach.
