Many Liverpool fans got the shock of a lifetime when Michael Thomas, the former Arsenal player who ruined our title dreams in the most dramatic fashion in May 1989 joined Liverpool.
Thomas made himself more popular though when he scored a tremendous goal in the FA Cup final versus Sunderland at the end of his first season. Souness liked his versatility as Thomas was able to play as a right back, centre half and midfield.
Thomas had his fair share of injuries and his career never really took off at Liverpool until in the 1995-96 season when he finally showed his worth. He displayed his box-to-box atleticism and played a holding role in midfield allowing Barnes freedom to attack. His career was on the downturn again after two good seasons and he joined Souness at Benfica.
