The unsung hero of Liverpool's 1986 FA cup-winning team, midfielder Kevin MacDonald arrived at Anfield halfway through the 1984-85 season.
Graeme Souness left a huge space in midfield when he left for Italy and the former Leicester captain helped fill the void. He managed to get a run in the side in the second half of his first season and featured from time to time the following double season. He hit form at the right time to win a place in the first 11 that won Everton at Wembley in the 1986 FA Cup final.
Disaster struck on 20th of September 1986, at the Dell when after coming on as a substitute against Southampton he broke his leg.
MacDonald faced a lengthly lay-off and he returned as a substitute towards the title run-in in the 1987-88 season. He then started the 1988-89 season in the first-team frame and then returned to Leicester City on loan and had another loan spell in Glasgow with Rangers before being signed permanently by Coventry City where he played 44 games in two seasons.
He joined Leicester's coaching staff and was even caretaker manager for four games from 22nd November 1994 to 14th December 1994 after Brian Little and Allan Evans quit Leicester for Villa Park. When Steve Staunton took over as Ireland's manager in January 2006 he appointed MacDonald as his senior coach, albeit on a part-time basis combining the role with his coaching job at Aston Villa. His contract was terminated along with Staunton's in October 2007 and MacDonald is currently reserve team coach at Aston Villa.
