John Nicholson was understudy to Dick White and managed to make one appearance for Liverpool Football Club in the 1959-60 season.
It was the only League match White missed during the whole campaign and he was to make the position his own during the next season too. But just as White's career was finishing, Ron Yeats arrived at Anfield and it was clear that John had no future with the club.
He left for Port Vale in August 1961 and made nearly 200 League appearances for the Potteries club before moving on again, this time to Doncaster Rovers. He did well in the lower divisions but was sadly killed in a car crash the day after his 30th birthday.

Port Vale, Doncaster Rovers
