Hughes played 14 times in Football League fixtures for Liverpool during the first decade of the 20th Century.

But as these were spread over five seasons, he was never a regular member of the first-team during any of those years.

Most of his appearances came as a replacement for the 'regular' half-back pairing of that time, Maurice Parry and James Bradley.
