Lanarkshire born James Cleland never played in an 'competitive' league match for Liverpool but he did play in the 'Test Match' at the end of the 1894-95 season (these special matches decided the promotion and relegation issues of the day).

Liverpool had finished bottom of the First Division that season and were condemned to the Second Division after the only first-team match James Clelland played in was lost by a single goal to Bury at the end of April 1895.
