George Pither had played 16 league matches, scoring six goals for Merthyr Town in Third Division South when he joined Liverpool in the first part of the 1925-26 season.
He played 12 league matches for Liverpool in the 1920's, exclusively as replacement left-winger for the established Fred Hopkin. Hopkin missed six league games during the 1926-27 season and Pither replaced him in all of them; and exactly the same thing happened the following season when Pither played in the six fixtures that Hopkin missed. Pither's only goal for the club came on the first day of October 1927 when Portsmouth were crushed 8-2 at Anfield with the other scorers being William Devlin (4) & Gordon Hodgson (3). Pither later played in Third Division North with Crewe Alexandra, playing 38 league games and scoring 11 in the 1928-29 season and New Brighton, playing 79 games and scoring 10 from 1929-1931.
