David Thompson was a favourite among the Liverpool crowd as he was always willing to give 100 per cent.
David was sold to Coventry City before the start of the 2000-2001 season and spent two years with the Sky Blues becoming one of their key players scoring a creditable 15 goals in 66 league games. Despite Coventry's relegation from the Premier League in 2001, David stayed and continued to perform well as the club attempted to make an immediate return to the top league. In August, 2002 the player was given the opportunity to re-establish himself in the Premier League when Blackburn Rovers signed him for a few of around one and a half million pounds. Thompson continued to progress at Blackburn and even earned himself a call-up to the England squad in October 2002 but unfortunately had to withdraw through injury.
Severely affected by different injuries, David struggled to make the big breakthrough at Blackburn and Rovers eventually let him move to Wigan Athletic in the January 2006 transfer-window. However, at the end of the 2005-06 season Wigan also released him and in the summer he signed a one-year contract with Portsmouth. But frustrated at not being given much of a chance on the south coast, Thompson returned to the north-west to sign for Bolton Wanderers on the final day of the January, 2007 'window'. He played only eight league games for Bolton before they too released him (May, 2007) and towards the end of the same year he started a trial with Sheffield United. Only days after starting that trial, David Thompson announced that he would be reiring as an active footballer because of his constant injury problems, particularly to his cartilage. Although there are/were rumours that David might move into coaching, his decision to retire from playing professional football at the relatively early age of 30 was in stark contrast to the praise that had been heaped on him when he emerged as one of Liverpool's most promising youngsters just over a decade earlier.
