Dublin-born Brian Mooney figured in a Liverpool first-team match came when he substituted Jim Beglin during the club's 3-2 League cup victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage on October 7, 1986.
It was the second leg of the Littlewoods Cup tie that saw Liverpool head into the match with a 10-0 first leg lead. The Fulham programme carried a picture of Diego Maradona praying on the front cover as the London club showed their sense of humour. Liverpool won 3-2 on the night.
Although registered as a Liverpool player since the 1983-84 season, it was clear that his chances of breaking through at Anfield were extremely slight given the club's continued run of success through the whole of the 1980's. Mooney had a loan spell at Wrexham before joining Preston in the 1987-88 season. He spent three seasons at Deepdale where he played 128 games for the Lancashire club, scoring 20 goals, which turned out to be the best spell of his career.
