Barry Venison promoted himself to Liverpool's management by writing a letter to them, and every other first division club, asking if they were interested in his services.
Barry first attracted attention when he lead Sunderland out in the 1985 Milk Cup final, the youngest ever captain in a Wembley final.
He began the 1986-87 season as first choice right back at Anfield with Jim Beglin playing on the left. Venison switched to the left when Beglin broke his leg, halfway through the season.
Injuries hampered his progress the following season allowing other players to settle into the full-back slots.
Venison got an extended run again in the 1889-90 championship season but injuries continued to bother him and in 1992 he joined Newcastle. He later made his full England debut after excelling in Kevin Keegan's Newcastle midfield.
